Philosophy of Care

JOINT WISDOM

In my practice, I use an integrative approach, tailoring interventions to your unique qualities and challenges. My therapy process begins with a clinical interview, including assessments and an in depth discussion of your goals. I foster a collaborative dynamic, creating a safe space for self-reflection, inviting your insights, and explaining the reasoning behind my methods. In early sessions, we'll prioritize "emotional first aid" by developing skills for regulation and distress tolerance through experiential practices. Along the way, I'll encourage self-expression through dialogue, writing, and creative methods like art, collage, or sand tray. Together we'll review progress and address any limiting beliefs, unhealthy coping patterns, or interpersonal challenges that get in the way of you reaching your goals. If trauma needs to be addressed, we'll work at your pace, ground you in present safety, and move toward healing with a trauma-informed approach.

Establish immediate coping skills to use in daily life.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Teaches you to

identify and change unhealthy thoughts and

behaviors that contribute to your emotional   difficulties.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy: Addresses   intense emotions, dysregulation, and self-harm

 behaviors by teaching mindfulness, emotional

regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal   effectiveness skills.

 Resilience-Informed Therapies: Uses imagination

and mental rehearsal to help you connect with and

shift body sensations linked to emotional states.

In this way, you become your own ally who has the

 ability to self-soothe and self-regulate.

Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB) provides a framework that is grounded in the idea that our unique mind is shaped by genetics and profoundly influenced by what happened to us in the past, particularly by our interpersonal and attachment experiences. Essentially, our mind wears history-colored glasses. What we experienced and learned in the past is the lens through which we perceive ourselves, others, and the world in the present. The aim of therapy is to become aware of how our mind processes emotions, thoughts, and social connections and to rewire or integrate our brain toward an experience of well-being.

Self-Trust And Integrated Resilience (STAIR) incorporates Interpersonal Neurobiology into its method. Progress is made when you are able to differentiate past emotional experiences and link to present awareness and neurological resources. Early

neural networks formed under threat can still trigger

reactions today. Differentiating and linking these

networks fosters brain integration, showing us that past threats are reduced or gone. As adults, with greater resources and choices, we can build self-trust in our ability to regulate emotions in triggering situations that once felt overwhelming or intolerable.

The process of therapy is similar to "parts work."

Self-Compassion_edited_edited.jpg

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) helps us understand that negative thoughts, emotional distress, and self-defeating behaviors stem from evolution. The"old" brain (limbic system, brain stem) reacts quickly to sensory input through our template of past experiences which is essential to our survival but the "old" brain can make mistakes and trigger unnecessary distress. The "new" brain (neocortex) is slower to react but has advanced thinking skills and can send calming signals to the "old" brain. However, when we are conditioned to see our world and emotions as unsafe or self as deficient, the "new" brain can intensify "old" brain survival responses. CFT emphasizes developing self-compassion to disrupt negative loops and foster adaptive, healing responses.

Posttraumatic Growth & Self-Healing

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy model that embodies much of what the aforementioned therapies offer and an effective way to desensitize emotional distress and reprocess traumatic memories. Using a computer metaphor, traumatic memories are like outdated, corrupted files misplaced in the system where they are not only difficult to access but cause glitches with processing information. EMDR helps the brain access these files/traumatic memories, reprocess, and store them in long term memory, thus reducing disruptive glitching and error messages.
